Here’s the thing that happens when you’re Pharrell: Your vocal ends up on the new Daft Punk single, which is tipped by pretty much everyone to be the Song of the Summer, and then you go into the studio with everyone else in the music industry who matters, too — namely, Beyonce, Miley Cyrus, Jennifer Hudson, Jay-Z, No Doubt, Kendrick Lamar, Busta Rhymes and Kylie Minogue. Kylie Minogue! Kylie Minogue. It’s fine. Everything is fine. Completely normal. Nothing to see here. Just move along.
So! What insights can Pharrell reveal about these artists and their work? Pretty much nothing of any substance. Glamorously swathed in an Hermes blanket (could your faves?), Pharrell said simply about his work with Jay-Z: “The Rain Man is back. I gave him a straight-up Stanley Kubrick movie. The Rain Man is back.” (Pretty sure he’s not talking about this Rain Man, although you can never be certain.)
As for his work with Miley and her love of hip-hop, Pharrell sounded borderline defensive: “She means it,” he said. “She can tell you everything about Waka Flocka. Tell you when Gucci Mane came out. She means it because she grew up in that. She grew up listening to that with all her friends. Her day job was one thing, but hanging out with her friends — you saw some of the trouble that she got into — she’s showing you the signs that she was a different girl.”
